How to install an eSIM on Android (Samsung and Google Pixel)

On Android you install the eSIM from the SIM settings. Menus vary slightly by brand; here are Samsung and Google Pixel, the most common. Do it on Wi-Fi before you travel.

Before you start

Check your phone supports eSIM: dial *#06# and see if an EID number appears. Samsung Galaxy S20 or later, many Z Flip and Z Fold models, and Google Pixel 3 or later support it. The phone must be unlocked.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
  2. Tap «Add eSIM».
  3. Choose «Scan QR code from service provider» and scan it, or «Enter activation code» and paste the code.
  4. Name the line «PFB Away».

Google Pixel

  1. Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
  2. Tap «Add SIM», then «Download a SIM instead?».
  3. Scan the QR or choose to enter it manually and paste the activation code.
  4. Give the line a name so you can recognise it.

When you land

  1. In SIM manager (Samsung) or Network & internet (Pixel), choose the eSIM for mobile data.
  2. Open the eSIM line and turn on «Roaming» or «Data roaming».
  3. If it doesn't connect within a couple of minutes, turn airplane mode on and off.
  4. Check that the line's APN is «globaldata» (Access Point Names).

FAQ

Does it work on any Android?

Only on unlocked phones with eSIM. The *#06# trick is the quickest way to find out.

What if the phone asks for the details separately?

Your account shows the SM-DP+ address and the activation code: type them where it asks.
