How to install an eSIM on iPhone, step by step
Installing an eSIM on an iPhone takes a minute and doesn't touch your usual SIM. Do it at home, on Wi-Fi, a few days before you travel: your plan's days don't start until you use data at your destination.
Before you start
You need an iPhone XS, XR or later, unlocked and connected to Wi-Fi. If dialling *#06# shows an EID number, your iPhone supports eSIM.
Option 1: with the direct link (iOS 17.4 or later)
- Open your eSIM email or your PFB Away account on the iPhone itself.
- Tap «Install eSIM on this iPhone».
- Follow the iPhone's steps: Continue, then Add eSIM.
- Name the line something like «PFB Away» so you can recognise it.
- When it asks about mobile data, keep your usual line for now.
Option 2: with the QR code
- Open the QR code on another screen (a computer or tablet).
- On the iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM.
- Choose «Use QR Code» and scan it with the camera.
- If you can't scan, tap «Enter Details Manually» and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
When you land
- Settings → Mobile Data: choose the eSIM line for data.
- Open that line and turn on «Data Roaming». It's needed even though it costs nothing extra.
- Keep your usual line for calls and WhatsApp, and turn off «Allow Mobile Data Switching» so you don't use your home plan's data.
- Give it a minute or two to connect to the local network.
One important note
Don't delete the eSIM when you get home. Once deleted it can't be reinstalled, while if you leave it installed and switched off you can top it up for your next trip.
FAQ
Do I lose my number when I install the eSIM?
No. It's a data-only eSIM: your usual SIM keeps working for calls, texts and WhatsApp.
Can I install it before I travel?
Yes, and it's the best way. The days start when the eSIM uses data in your destination country, not when you install it.
