Internet in Greece on a team trip: when you need an eSIM

PFB Away team · 27 October 2026

Let's be clear from the start: if you have a SIM from an EU country, your plan works like at home in Greece. Even so, on many team trips an eSIM is worth it. Here's when it is and when it isn't.

When you DON'T need an eSIM in Greece

If your SIM is from the EU, your plan has plenty of data and the trip is short, EU roaming covers you without extra charges. Greece is in the Union.

When it DOES pay off

  1. Players or staff with a SIM from outside the EU (Latin America, the US, the UK…): for them Greece is international roaming and usually expensive.
  2. Plans with little roaming data: many «unlimited» plans cap data abroad under the fair use policy.
  3. When staff share data with the laptop for video and you don't want to burn your own plan's data.
  4. Long stays: if you spend more time abroad than at home and use more data there, your operator can start charging you (it checks over 4-month periods).

Prices for Greece

From €2.99 for 3 GB over 30 days. 10 GB for 30 days, the most popular, is €6.99. For a weekend tournament, 3-day Unlimited Plus is €5.99 (October 2026 prices). If the trip goes on to other countries, the Europe plan covers 37 with a single eSIM.

Athens, Thessaloniki and the islands

In Athens and Thessaloniki, the country's two big basketball cities, mobile coverage is good. On ferries and some small islands it can drop during the crossing; download the offline map before you board.

FAQ

Does my EU plan work in Greece?

Yes, if it's from an EU country: Greece is inside EU roaming. Check how much data your plan lets you use abroad, because many cap it.

Does the eSIM work on the islands?

It works wherever Greek operators have coverage. At sea, during a ferry crossing, the signal can disappear for a while.
